A paint chip lies. That square is two inches across under fluorescent lights. A house is four hundred feet in Southern California sun. The same greige reads cool at noon and muddy at dusk. Beneath the oaks common around our streets, every color changes further.

This is the reason color gets a separate step in this work. Test patches go up on the existing wall. These are viewed at dawn, noon, and evening. Any color selected beneath one light is a decision the owner may resent for ten years.

The application side rests on surface prep. This climate is hard on finishes. Wall surfaces develops fine splits. Wood trim checks and separates. Sealant fails away from joints. Coating over all of those earns two years until it fails again. Cracks must be filled. Failed caulk is cut out. Surfaces gets pressure washed and primed where exposed.

Interiors require separate care. Furniture covered. Lines drawn straight without masking seepage. Flooring papered completely. A residence is livable while the work happens.

The work extends beyond flat surfaces. Kitchen cabinet resurfacing updates an entire kitchen for far less of a remodel. Popcorn ceilings are scraped. Old paper is stripped. Doors and trim, railings, patio covers, sealed or painted.

The areas by Conejo Community Park, along Moorpark Road, and out around Newbury Park include houses built many years apart. A 1970s home needs a palette another way than a modern construction. Choosing a palette to the house, the roof, and the setting is the gap between a house that reads as redone and a home that seems complete.
